Atelier van Lieshout
Orange Tub
The Netherlands, 1995
reinforced and lacquered fiberglass, chrome-plated metal
43.5 w x 25.75 d x 18.75 h inches

With a range of subversive art objects--some functional, some satirical, some outrageous--Atelier van Lieshout challenges the traditional roles of the artist/designer. Playing contractor more than creator, his furniture pieces intentionally break with the idea of hand-made or stylistically recognizable artworks in their direct, anonymous aesthetic. These utilitarian objects are not only practical: they convey van Lieshout's highly conceptual ideas for a strict utopian society of self-sufficiency within rigid communalism. This is a unique work.
